Acronyms and short forms across networking, data centres, cloud, security, operations and regulation.
Networking, data centres, cloud, security and regulation all have their own shorthand. Here are the acronyms and terms used on this site, with what each stands for and a plain line on what it does. Most also link to the page where I cover it.
Type part of an acronym or a word from its meaning, such as BGP, tunnel or resilience. Each entry says what the letters stand for and what it does in one line. Most also link to the page where I explain it. Where the same letters mean two different things, each meaning has its own entry and its own links.

Some acronyms mean different things to different teams. A network engineer and a service manager can use the same two letters and talk past each other. I check the context before I expand one, and I spell it out in writing the first time.

DR: designated router. OSPF elects one router on a shared segment to collect and pass on link state updates. Or disaster recovery. Getting a service back at a second site after a major failure.
AD: administrative distance. How much a router trusts a route source. Lower wins: connected 0, static 1, OSPF 110. Or Active Directory. The Microsoft directory for users, computers, groups and logins.
CE: customer edge. The customer router that peers with the provider edge in an MPLS VPN. Or Cyber Essentials. The UK government backed baseline security certification.
RT: route target. A BGP tag that decides which VRFs import a route in MPLS VPN or EVPN. Or route type. The kind of EVPN message, such as type 2 for MAC and IP, type 5 for prefixes.

This glossary is not written once and left. It is rebuilt from the pages themselves: every time a page spells out an acronym, the term and a link to that page are picked up here, alongside a curated list of wider industry terms.
Acronyms and short forms across networking, data centres, cloud, security, operations and regulation.
862 entries link straight to the page and section where I explain them. The rest are wider industry terms that no page covers yet.
Spotted a term that is missing or unclear? The full explanations live on the topic pages, starting with networking fundamentals.
Every page follows the same idea: how it works, the choices that matter, and where I have used it. The foundations pages explain the basics the others build on.
